WAPPA BLUE YAGASURI
WAPPA is one of the traditional Japanese crafts made in Odate, Akita pref. Northern part of Japan. Akita cedar plate are softened in boiling water to bent, and then a bottom board is added to make the rice container and other simple products. WAPPA BLUE YAGASURI is a wooden container with a mosaic pattern "YAGASURI" with indigo on the top of the WAPPA.
Akita is deep in the mountains and has a cool climate even in summer. So Akita cedar grown very slowly and has a fine and beautiful grain. It is compared to warm, smooth human skin in Japan.
Indigo is the color of kimono, which Japanese people had loved and used for a long time. And YAGASURI is the primitive pattern of kimono.
WAPPA BLUE YAGASURI combines these two Japanese traditions, to create a glamorous look.

They are available in a variety of sizes, from small lunch boxes to large containers, tea set vessels. They are made in suitable proportions even when combined.
It is important to reinterpret the manufacturing process when designing handmade products. New possibilities are created not by analyzing the final shapes, but by analyzing the potential for modeling latent in each process.
Bent-wood-works tend to focus on the bent boards, but the top and bottom plates are also important factors. Various and many technique are used by craftsmen to fit the plates tightly. WAPPA BLUE YAGASURI was created by designing one of these processes.

秋田杉と藍、２つの伝統の華やかな取り合わせ
WAPPA BLUE 矢絣は、秋田県大館市で作られる日本の伝統工芸品のひとつ「曲げわっぱ」に藍色の吉祥文様で加飾した木工品です。
山深く夏でも涼しい秋田の杉は、細かく美しい木目に育ちます。その明るく澄んだ淡紅色はあたたかみのある人肌にも例えられます。一方で、藍色は日本人の肌に最も似合う色とも言われています。古くから日本で愛され、使われてきた日本の代表的な伝統色である着物の色です。
その秋田杉の木肌に、原初的な着物の柄である矢絣を藍色で描きました。相性の良い２つの伝統の華やな取り合わせを楽しむ曲げわっぱです。
サイズはお弁当箱から茶櫃、大ぶりのトレーまで、様々な大きさでご用意しました。組み合わせも最適な比率で展開しています。
曲物は、主に曲げた板と平らな板の２つ部材を組み合わせて作られます。曲げた板に注目されがちですが、通常の曲物でも平らな板も板目を揃え、反らないよう、漏れないよう、外れないように様々な手間が入っています。伝統工芸のデザインは、職人の手の動き、素材の性質などを踏まえた製造工程を捉えることが重要になりますが、工程を全て並べて捉え直すことで、新しい表現が生まれ、伝統工芸が可能性を広げることになると考えています。最初にデザインの最終的な形を求めるのではなく、製造プロセスを再解釈し、各工程に潜む可能性を分析することで、新しい造形の可能性を見つけ出し、その可能性の中で戦略的に有用なものを探すような作業です。
「WAPPA BLUE 矢絣」は、曲物の平らな板を加工する工程のひとつを再解釈して加飾するための工程と捉え直し、その工程をデザインすることで生まれました。
